West Cliff Drive::Santa Cruz, CA
The owners wanted to retire to a trouble-free home. To avoid potential deterioration on a site next to the ocean with prevailing northwesterly winds, concrete-based synthetic stucco and Hardieboard panels were used. An extensive rain screen system protects from water intrusion and allows the house to "breathe." Marvin Integrity fiberglass windows and powder coated aluminum railings were used to eliminate rust and corrosion issues. Passive solar design takes advantage of the south facing site for warmth. When opened, a 15-foot Fleetwood multi-slide door allows for cooling breezes off the ocean. Radiant heat and foam insulation keep the home comfortable and quiet. This home qualified for a Green Building Award from the City of Santa Cruz.
